A Grain of Deception
"Tell your son to come to court. Or I will have him dragged here. On his knees."
Queen Elizabeth

Synopsis[]

Mary Vows to Avenge Lola's Death
Queen Mary, unsure who to trust, tests her brother James to ensure his loyalty after hearing of his meeting with John Knox. Queen Elizabeth agrees to help Lord Darnley, in an attempt to sabotage the powerful suitor's relationship with Mary.

Plot[]

In Scotland, James is training Mary how to fight. They take a break and discuss Mary's marriage prospects. Mary wants to marry Lord Darnley because he has a claim to the English throne, in spite of James' warning about his ruthless ambition and overindulgence in women and drink.

In England, Elizabeth is having tea with Lady Lennox, Darnley's mother. Elizabeth is not pleased that Lady Lennox has not brought Darnley with her. While Lady Lennox tries to play dumb, Elizabeth knows she has been corresponding with Mary about arranging a marriage between her and her son.

Spain's Queen, Elisabeth, has come to visit French court. She claims it was to get away from the rumour that she drove Don Carlos mad with desire, but soon reveals her plan to stem the France's rising tide of Protestantism. She believes a match between Claude and Martel de Guise to be just the thing.

Greer and Mary attend Lola's funeral. Mary starts to feel unwell and Greer offers to escort her to her carriage, but Mary insists she stay behind with Lola's family. In the carriage, Mary blacks out.

Greer swiftly realizes that Mary has been kidnapped and alerts James. He suspects Clan Gordon has Mary. As it turns out, he is right. The Earl of Clan Gordon wants Mary to marry his son.

Elizabeth is consulting her advisors after the attempt on her life when Gideon comes in. Elizabeth charges Gideon with finding Darnley and bringing him to her. Instead, Gideon visits Lord Narcisse in his cell. He is convinced that the letter Lola received was forged and would like to absolve Mary of the blame. Narcisse points him to John's nanny, Reneé.

Claude is upset that her mother is marrying her off just because Leeza said so, but Catherine reminds her that Spain can crush their nation if she doesn't. Martel comes in and hands Claude a letter she wrote to Leith that was found on one of the burned bodies as a means of getting her to accept that Leith is gone. He also urges her to marry him.

Gideon finds Reneé and John at an inn in the village. He warns her that he has archers outside the window and that if she were to move, they would shoot. He presses her on who sent the message to Lola and Reneé alludes to it being John Knox, but is too scared to say anything else. Gideon picks John up and Reneé, out of fear and desparation, leaps in front of the window to be shot.

Knox goes to James with the knowledge that Mary has been abducted and the offer to help him return Mary to safety. In exchange, James would wipe out the entire Clan Gordon, thus eliminating Mary's last stronghold of Catholics in the north and weakening her as a result.

Mary commands the Earl of Clan Gordon to return her to Edinburgh at once, but he continues to insist that she marry his son. If she doesn't, Clan Gordon will turn against her.

Elizabeth has been apprised of John Knox's role in her assassination attempt by Gideon, but she can't go after him without the evidence that died along with Reneé. And even if Mary were innocent, Elizabeth knows that she is trying to take her throne. As Elizabeth blathers on about how she and Mary are pawns in a game that is larger than either of them and about how it is so simple in reality, Gideon shows her how simple being on a path of war with Mary really is.

At a dinner party at French court, Leeza is looking into the death of Martel's father while Claude plans to kill Martel. Catherine stops her before she can do so and Claude breaks into tears, telling her that Martel had Leith killed. The letter she wrote to Leith led her to witnesses, but she doesn't know if they would testity against a powerful family that are the Guise, especially now that they have aligned themselves with Spain. Catherine and Claude plot to kill Martel together.

Quotes[]

Queen Mary: I'm not looking for a man to love, I'm looking for a weapon to use against her and her throne.

Queen Elizabeth: Tell your son to come to court. Or I will have him dragged here. On his knees.

Queen Leeza: The Prince of Spain came to France whole, and left with an enormous piece of wood sticking out of his skull.
Queen Catherine: That is not true. We had our finest surgeon remove it.

Earl of Clan Gordon: You're going to marry my son.
Queen Mary: The hell I am.

Princess Claude: You don't want me to marry Martel either?
Queen Catherine: I had his father killed. Do you think I want him rising in station?

James Stuart: We believe it was Clan Gordon who took her. Their proposals to the queen had gone unanswered.
John Knox: So they kidnapped her, as is their tradition. They're lovely people, aren't they? Good Catholics.

Queen Catherine: A daughter joining her mother for an evening stroll is hardly a crime.
Princess Claude: No, but murder is!

Queen Catherine: The tears might be a bit much.
Princess Claude: The tears are real!

Lord Narcisse: She wasn't your friend, Elizabeth, she was your prisoner. What a grotesque curse of royalty that you cannot even tell the difference.

James Stuart: Do not threaten me. I am half brother to the queen. My family has royal blood in our veins. The people believe that God chose us to rule, while you merely spout His teachings.
