The Devil's Mark is a symbol given by The Dark Riders to prove that the recipient of the mark has no soul. It is their punishment for renouncing their Catholic faith and becoming a Protestant.
The Dark Riders were originally believed to have demonic powers, and be in connection with The Reckoning as they would chase men down, posing at The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse before branding them. However, it was later determined they were simply Catholic extremists.
