Plot[]
After Sebastian bestows Kenna his grandmother's ring, she strolls the ballroom with Greer as it's being prepared for Lola's wedding. Kenna points out how lavish it is, compared to her rather modest ceremony, but Greer asks Kenna not to be bitter on Lola's special day. King Henry comes up to Kenna and claims that she's still trying to impress him, before telling her not to hide away or he'll have to come find her. Lola and Julien's Wedding takes place that evening. All the young couples dance, including Francis and Mary. But their merriment is short-lived, as Queen Catherine pulls them aside to tell them that Cardinal Morosini, the new Papal Envoy, has arrived at court to discuss rents and tenancies with Henry, money that the French desparately need. But seeing how Henry is feeling, Mary takes matters into her own hands. She walks over to the Cardinal and instantly charms him, getting him to agree to meet with her and Francis over the rents. While Mary dances with the Cardinal, Catherine finds Henry tied up and collared in his bedroom, his sexcapades with Penelope on pause while she went to fetch more supplies. Catherine berates him for his tryst with Penelope and warned him that The Vatican could soon find out about it. Mary is reunited with her half-brother, James Stuart, who has come with news from Scotland. He informs her that Scots are complaining at the lack of their own people in the government, as Marie de Guise is French, and so are half the people that she installed in the government. James urges Mary to return to Scotland to show her people that they still have a queen. While Mary is eager to go, Francis isn't. He believes Mary should stay here until they secure the Cardinal's support, because without it, France would look weak before the world. However, Mary notes just how much of her life at court has been geared toward bending for France and addressing French problems, so she will visit her homeland, with or without her husband's support. Julien and Lola wake up on their first morning as husband and wife, but when Lola tries to bring up their impending marital tour, all Julien seems to be concerned about is acquiring her dowry. As Nostradamus and Olivia are in bed continuing their dalliance, Nostradamus has a vision of finding Olivia's body in a pile of dead bodies at the castle that completely unnerves him. Henry and Penelope walk up to Kenna and when she shows them the ring Bash gave her, Penelope requests it for herself. Kenna gives it up, upsetting Bash, but Catherine is forced to part with her own ring to make up for the loss. After Henry and Penelope walk away, Catherine approaches Kenna about getting rid of Penelope. In exchange, Kenna would get a large estate where she and Bash could stay away from court. Sebastian and Francis talk about Francis' dispute with Mary. Bash advises Francis to put Mary first, even if that means being a bad king. Lola steps on a necklace given to her by her new husband and one of the sapphires shatter. She shares her concern about Julien not opening up about his past with Greer, who brushes it aside and simply suggests that she talk it through with him. Nostradamus informs Catherine of his plan to leave court with Olivia and go to Trinidad, where they could have a fresh start and a chance to be happy. However, Catherine doesn't want to let him go, not when his gift of sight is so valuable to her. She wishes him luck, albeit warns him that the New World is filled with vipers. Francis goes to Mary and tells her that he wants to go to Scotland with her as soon as they secure the Cardinal's support of their rule. When Mary apprises James of the turn of events, he isn't too pleased about Francis and his men coming along, as he believes the wave of Frenchmen enterting his country would infuriate Scots, but he does ultimately relent and allow Francis to come. While packing, Olivia is nearly bitten by a snake planted in her luggage by Catherine, but Nostradamus manages to slay it in time. Bash and Francis spot James' footman paying one of the higher-end castle prostitutes and start to suspect how he could afford such a luxury, while Kenna advises Penelope to use a sexual position known as The Standing Cross with Henry to keep his interest. Francis brings the footman down to the dungeon where he questions his wealth, why he was using English coin to pay, and where he was headed after he paid the prostitute. The footman refuses to talk, so Francis calls in the torturer. Francis voices his suspicions on James' footman to Mary. He cautions her that he may be a Protestant Scottish rebel who is working with James to have Mary assassinated on her way home. He asks Mary for time to question the footman, torture him if need be, to get an answer as to whether there is a plot against Mary underway. As Penelope is performing The Standing Cross with a gagged and tied up Henry, Catherine bursts in with a bishop. The bishop calls the scene blasphemy and asks what God would think if he saw it. He leads Henry to believe that if he lost favour with God, he may lose his position as King, seeing as it was God who put him on it. And so, Henry ends it with Penelope. Nostradamus informs Olivia that he will not accomany her to Trinidad. He lies about his vision, saying that it was of her happy with someone else, as opposed to the condemned fate she would face with him under the watchful eye of a wicked queen. Once he informs her that his cousins will look after her, the two part with a final kiss. Lola meets with a banker in regard to her dowry. She learns that it will be transferred from her father to her husband upon her word, and since she doesn't trust Julien, she decides to postpone the decision. When James tells Mary that they have to leave immediately due to a bad storm incoming, she decides to depart for Scotland that very day. Francis promises to pay the tortured footman handsomely, as well as swear on an oath that he will let him live. The footman then reveals that he was paid by a group of people who wanted to assassinate Mary on her voyage to Scotland. While Kenna tells Bash that she likes the ring he gave her due to the certainty in her heart that it symbolizes, Henry continues to be haunted by visions of his wrongdoings and Mary refuses to believe that James would have a part in the plot against her. She wants to leave, but Francis doesn't allow her to risk it and has her locked in the tower. Mary raves at Francis' undermining her power, and warns that if Scotland were to fall while she is locked up, she would never forgive him. |
