Synopsis[]

Bash Saves Francis From Death
When Francis reluctantly agrees to help Bash uncover the threat in the woods, he ends in grave danger, with only Bash to save him. Meanwhile, the King Henry's madness causes chaos when a servant wins "Queen for the Day," and the King becomes obsessed with her. The King also forces a surprising, and unbreakable, union with a new couple at Court. Meanwhile, Greer gets caught kissing kitchen servant Leith, which threatens to ruin her.

Plot[]

Monsters II - 1 Olivia D'Amencourt n Nostradamus

Everything will be fine

Olivia wakes up from another nightmare from when she was held captive and Nostradamus assures her that The Darkness can no longer reach her. Just as Nostradamus says her wounds are healing nicely, he notices one on her back that seems to have become infected. Upon opening it and draining blood out of it, he finds a tooth from the Darkness embedded in it.

"When the body endures a trauma, it's hard for the mind to let go."
Nostradamus

Meanwhile, King Henry spaces out while in a meeting with a nobleman and lashes out at him when the noble requests aid in defeating a baron in battle. Since Henry has told him to handle the conflict on his own before, he punishes the noble for not listening by pouring candlewax in his ear. Queen Catherine comes in and immediately has the nobleman released. As he lets him go, Henry goes up to Catherine and demands to know why she canceled the Queen of the Bean celebration. Catherine believes it wise due to the king's increasingly erratic behaviour, but Henry overrules her and reinstates the contest.

Monsters II - 4 Mary Stuart n Francis

An uncomfortable tradition

Francis and Mary stroll the halls as Francis explains the annual tradition to Mary - a cake is baked and slices handed out to the servant girls of the castle, and the girl whose slice contains a single bean gets to become queen for a day. However, neither Mary nor Francis recall much of the event as when they were children, Catherine hid it from them and Sebastian and Francis usually fled for a hunt.

In the throne room, Greer and Lord Julien are standing aside and watching the event unfold as they converse. Leith is watching them while handing out pieces of a gorgeously decorated cake. A woman takes hers, frantically looks to see if she received a bean in hers, and leaves disappointed.

Mary and the ladies stand by as Kenna gushes about how attractive Julien is. The pair come over to Mary, who blesses their engagement. Things aren't going so well for Lola, though, whose suitor is delayed by five weeks. Since she's about to start showing, she's understandably upset, but Mary assures her that things are going to work out.

"We've been here a year, all but rotting on the vine."
Lady Kenna

In another corner of the room, Nostradamus informs Catherine that he's been monitoring Henry's food and drink intake for days and that there's no trace of any poison, meaning that he really is mad. He then gives her a sedative that induces a coma-like sleep, but it'll need to be snuck past his seven tasters first. Catherine decides to use Penelope, the kitchen girl who won Queen of the Bean and has been crowned queen for the day.

Monsters II - 10 Sebastian n King Henry

To the dungeon with you!

Sebastian has returned to the castle and before he can get out his reasoning, Henry has him taken to the dungeon. Francis, who has also come to the hallway to see what the yelling is about, claims that he is done helping his brother and warns Mary against letting Bash get close to her again. However, Mary sneaks down to the dungeon and sees Bash, where she tells him that he needs to leave for Spain before Francis' jealousy gets out of hand. Bash then explains the reason he returned in the first place - Rowan.

Meanwhile, Catherine fits Penelope with jewelry and promises the girl if she does what she says, the two could become long-term friends. She goes on to explain that Henry has a voracious sexual appetite with even more impressive stamina, with his vigorousness making anytime a woman lays down with him feel like hours. Catherine then produces the sedative vial and claims it's an aphrodisiac that will help Henry finish quicker. All she has to do is put it in Henry's wine.

Francis has a run-in with Mary and Sebastian while they're leaving the dungeon. They tell him about the Darkness, a concept that Francis scoffs at. His reaction changes, though, once he hears that Olivia actually survived the Darkness and lived to tell the tale.

Monsters II - 14 Leith

I had to see you!

Leith barges into Greer's room the day before he's scheduled to go to Spain with Lord Castleroy. He tells her he had to see her and she admits that though Lord Julian is everything she wanted, he's not Leith and the two kiss. Unfortunately, they're caught by Lord Julian, coming into the room baring a gift for his betrothed. Leith takes full responsibility, claiming to have come on to Greer and that the action wasn't returned, and though Julian won't let any harm come to the kitchen boy, the Hungarian Lord cannot bring himself to marry Greer.

Monsters II - 18 Nostradamus

The Darkness is a mere mortal

Olivia corroborates Bash's story about the Darkness to Francis and Mary. Francis is resolved to defeat the monster and Bash insists on accompanying him, but the two brothers continue to be at each other's throats. After Olivia gives them a vague description of where she was held and where the Darkness most likely resides, Nostradamus comes in to reveal that The Darkness is, indeed, human, based on the tooth he found in Olivia's back. The brothers then set off to find the man.

Greer cries to Lola and Kenna about the breakup with Lord Julian and how she believes she has no future because of the gossip that will surround her, when Mary comes in to consoles her. Just as Greer says they have all brought Mary shame except for Lola, Lola confesses the secret she has been carrying to them.

Monsters II - 24 King henry n Penelope

I'll take care of you!

Mary goes to Henry and tries to get Leith pardoned, only to find out that Lord Castleroy has already reduced his sentence to being signed up for military service. Before Mary can leave, Henry asks her to teach Penelope how to please a royal by demonstrating what she does for Francis. Horrified and afraid for Penelope's life, Mary makes an excuse for them to leave, but Penelope would rather stay. When Mary leaves, Penelope takes control by tying Henry's hands together and embracing his love for bondage.

In the woods, Bash and Francis lead a search party for Rowan that splits up when they reach the fir trees that Olivia mentioned. Francis begins to rant about how Bash wants to be with his wife, while Bash harangues Francis for having everything he ever wanted and still feeling threatened. Before the two can fight any more, they spot nearby tracks that look to be from the Darkness.

A feast is taking place in the throne room when Penelope approaches Catherine there and while she admits she didn't give the "medicine" to Henry, she assures the queen that she knows how to handle the king. Penelope then hints at the throne to let Catherine know that she is sitting in her seat. Catherine smiles and allows Penelope to sit on the throne, but on her way out of the room, Catherine mutters, "you stupid kitchen whore".

Monsters II - 26 Lola

I need to get married soon!

Mary finds Lola in her room, crying that her dress is no longer able to hide her pregnancy. Using a suggestion from Greer, Mary advises Lola to marry Lord Julien. Lola is unsure at first, but when Mary tells her friend that she needs their marriage to work in order to protect her own, Lola relents and pledges to do her best to get him to marry her.

Monsters - 38 Francis n Sebastian

Please don't die!

Meanwhile, Bash and Francis continue trailing the tracks until one of their horses gets spooked and Bash hears the piercing whistle of the Darkness, the same one he heard while in Rowan's home. Francis goes out further on the ice and sees that the prints stop and that the Darkness left behind the severed hand of Rowan. Just then, the ice beneath Francis' feet gives way and the future King of France falls into the water below. Bash ends up running ahead of his brother, busting out an ice hole of his own, and pulling an unconscious Francis to safety.

Back at the feast, Henry makes a nasty comment to Greer about her relationship with the "kitchen boy", while Lola chats up Lord Julian in a bid to help her reputation and her friendship with Mary, who watches them from afar.

Mary and Greer talk about Greer's predicament, but Mary leaves when she sees Lord Castleroy approaching. Greer doesn't understand why he continues to pursue her in spite of the gossip that surrounds her, and Castleroy tells her that it is because she has a good heart and because he cares for her. He knows he's not the man of her dreams, but reminds her that marriage would put all rumours to rest. Castleroy then proposes and Greer accepts, leading the two to hug it out.

Monsters - 40 Olivia D'Amencourt n Nostradamus

Happy to see you here

Across the room, Olivia has rejoined society and attempts to get Nostradamus on the dance floor, but to no avail.

Francis, wrapped up in a blanket in front of a fire, tells Bash that his men found the cave of the Darkness, but there was only blood, with no sign of Rowan. Bash admits that he saved his brother because of their familial bond and that he hopes to find something of his own one day, while Francis promises to slay the Darkness in the name of each of its victims, including Rowan.

"Maybe finally I can find something that's my own."
Sebastian
Monsters II - 33 Francis n Sebastian

What the hell, Father?!

Just then, Henry comes into the room, furious about Bash being released from the dungeon. He rambles about how Bash is a threat to everything he wants and admits to being the one to order Francis' guards to kill Bash. As Henry draws his sword, Francis gets in between his father and his brother and talks Henry down from killing Bash, saying that Bash saved his life that day and that if he were to be harmed, it would be like Henry harming himself. Henry backs down, but he warns them that if his next plan doesn't work, he will kill them both.

Olivia follows Nostradamus out onto the balcony, where he admits that the last person he danced with was his wife, who, along with their little children, died in the plague. As a result, he dedicated his life to saving others. Olivia then tells him that he saved her and the pair share a passionate kiss.

On another balcony, Greer and Lola convene as they wait for Leith to go to the military. While the troop is marching out of the castle, Leith and Greer give each other one last longing look, before Leith is pushed to keep going.

Monsters - 49 King Henry n Penelope n Queen Catherine

Wife, meet my new mistress

Catherine confronts Penelope about the sedative again, only this time the truth is revealed. Henry spryly comes into the room and chastises Catherine for insulting his queen, whom he claims to be in love with. Catherine then goes for the crown, but Henry stops her and warns her against insulting Penelope. Suddenly, as Catherine begins feeling unwell, Penelope and Henry reveal that they have had the contents of the vial emptied into her wine instead.

"I wanted to thank you, Catherine, for teaching me to think long-term."
Penelope

Luckily, she manages to stumble into the hallway and tell Mary to get Nostradamus before collapsing into her arms.

Later, Mary lets Francis in on his mother's condition - she is tended to by Nostradamus. Just then, Bash comes in and invites Mary and Francis to what his father views as the only way to preserve the peace between him and Francis.

In the throne room, a priest is standing before Sebastian and Kenna, prepared to consecrate their union. They are surrounded by the whole family, who is watching the event unfold in horror.

"You want me to say an oath?! What about your oath? You promised me someone with a title!"
Lady Kenna
Monsters - 52 Sebastian n Kenna

I will never forgive you!

Kenna is crying as she stands before Sebastian. The king mockingly gives his son a title of Master of Horse and Hunt to fulfil Kenna's requirement of marrying a man with a title. Kenna pleads with Henry to stop, but he is only aggravated further to the point where he pulls out his sword and hisses at them to "say the words". Only then does Bash take Kenna as his lawful wife.

Sebastian uses his new title of Master of Horse and Hunt to order a search of the woods. Mary checks up on Bash, who then professes that he is still in love with her.

King Henry: Lady Greer, well done with that kitchen boy. That nasty gossip is the first interesting thing I've ever heard about you.

Lord Castleroy: I'm too rich to care what people say. What I care about is you.

Sebastian: Maybe finally I can find something that is my own.

Penelope: I wanted to thank you, Catherine, for teaching me to think long-term.

Lady Kenna: You want me to say an oath? What about your oath?! You promised me someone with a title!

Guard: I don't take orders from bastards.
