"All that is needed is a face,
a claim,
a bloodline,
and someone who is willing to die for the cause.
"
King Francis

Synopsis[]

Mary's Plan to Help Condé Backfires
Mary goes to extremes to halt Francis from his quest to catch Condé at any cost. Catherine, jealous of Narcisse's relationship with Lola, asks him to do something unforgivable to prove himself, Kenna crosses a line with General Renaude and Greer makes a choice that might end her relationship with Leith.

Plot[]

Kenna has a sex dream about General Renaude, who, instead of being in Kenna's bed, is in King Francis' office, apprising him of their mission to find Louis Condé. So far, they have been unsuccessful in locating Condé. After Renaude is dismissed, Mary once again begs Francis to spare Condé, but Francis isn't inclined to do so.

Kenna has a run-in with Renaude, while Leith doesn't allow Claude to pay a visit to her "twin-soul", because her mother doesn't approve of him, and like Leith tells Claude, he would never want to anger someone like Catherine de Medici.

"- One thing I will never do is risk getting on Catherine de Medici's bad side.
- You'd rather get on my bad side?!
- Ha! A million times, yes.
"
Leith Bayard to Princess Claude

Some highborn widow demands an audience with Greer, and before she has a chance to object, the woman unveils herself to be Mary. Meanwhile, post-coital Narcisse and Catherine are brainstorming ways to get rid of Condé, before Catherine changing the subject to Narcisse and Lola. Narcisse swears that he is done with that "passing amusement", but Catherine insists that he prove it by doing something unforgivable.

Mary asks Greer to have her girls listen out for any information on Condé, since she knows that the men who frequent her brothel boast to her girls. Greer agrees to it, and of course, there is a substancial amount in it for them. Meanwhile, Leith goes to the cardinal to ask about the annulment. At first, the cardinal informs him that there are many more deeds to be done before he can afford an annulment, but then he adds that there is faster way of obtaining it. And that is, stealing a golden blade from the castle and selling it.

Kenna and Lola are strolling in the castle halls. Lola notices that the nobles keep giving her inappropriate looks, but she ignores it and listens to Kenna harp on about her crush to Renaude instead. After one ogle too many, Lola confronts the nobles and learns that they are looking at a portrait of her in a bath.

Francis rules on Condé's fate, and that is, he can't allow him to live. He tells Mary of his decision, and though she pretends to accept it, she instead devises a plan to help Condé flee France by giving him a different idetity to step into. Condé and Mary then part ways in the woods.

"- We can't risk meeting again.
- For the rest of our lives.
- I hope that yours is a long one. Go. Live.
"
Queen Mary to Louis Condé

Claude tries bribing Leith into letting her leave the castle, and when that fails, she follows him to see what he is up. She finds Leith trying to steal a family heirloom, and instead of turning him in, Claude cuts a deal with Leith; he is to take her wherever she wants to go, and cover for her with her mother.

As for Lola, she has taken the portrait and gone to Narcisse with it. She demands to know the reason behind making such a portrait and allowing it to be seen by other men. He claims that he made a bet with a fellow noble as to which woman is prettier, adding that he lost. Lola believes there is more to it, trying to wring the truth out of him, but Narcisse insists that he did it just for the hell of it, reminds her of his wrongdoings and asserts himself as the heartless man everyone thinks he is, including Lola now.

"Do you think, because we shared a few nice moments, that you saw some good in me that no one else had ever seen before?"
Lord Narcisse

While Condé is found and apprehended by Renaude and his men, Claude is reunited with her lover. At the castle, Catherine and Francis are about to inform Mary of Condé's immediate execution, only to find out that Mary already knows. As for Claude, her lover breaks up with her. And as for Condé, he is rescued by Lord Akers and his men by order of Queen Elizabeth. Akers explains to Condé that his queen still rejoices in the idea of marrying him, but only if he lays claim to the French throne.

As Leith and Claude have returned to the castle, a heartbroken Claude tries to break Leith's heart too by ordering him to break up with Greer or face death on the basis of stealing from the royal family. However, Leith refuses, exclaiming that he loves Greer and reassuring Claude that she will eventually find love too. This prompts Claude to gift Leith one of her earrings, which is worth enough money to buy an annulment.

Catherine goes to Narcisse and tells him that he has passed her test; but he explains how her jealousy nearly destroyed what was between them and affirms that she is lovable, despite her late husband, King Henry, leading her to believe that she wasn't. At a safe house, Condé is ready to leave Lord Akers and refuse his proposal, but Lord Akers persuades him into accepting it in the end.

Meanwhile, Renaude informs Francis and Catherine that they lost Condé to an unknown outside help, though Renaude theorizes that Condé may have had help even before that. Francis correctly assumes that it was Mary, and confronts her about it. She confirms his suspicion that she did indeed help him, but adds that it's over between them. However, Francis doesn't feel reassured by that sentiment.

Renaude and Kenna share yet another tension-filled conversation, though much to Kenna's dismay, Renaude informs her that he is to leave tomorrow to expand his search for the fugitive, as well as meet a potential bride in Amiens. Leith comes to Greer with the money to buy an annulment, but Greer decides not to go through with it on the grounds that she cannot depend on a man again and cannot risk counting on him, only to be let down again.

"I thought we could count on our love for one another. That's what I've always believed, but you never have, have you?"
Leith Bayard

While Kenna goes to Renaude's bedchamber and offers herself to him, Bash meets Mary on the balcony, where their conversation results in a realization: Everyone below Mary's rank who attempts to pursue her will eventually end up like Condé, and the only one who could emerge unscathed is the King.

And so, Mary goes to Francis and declares that they ought to forgive each other, but he isn't so fond of the idea, not when France is endangered by the man whom Mary helped escape. Concurrently, Condé is secretly meeting with displeased Protestant nobles, who are chanting Condé's name and addressing him as King Louis of France.

"France has been through so much. Most of this country is like dry tinder, just waiting for a spark. All that is needed is a face, a claim, a bloodline, and someone who is willing to die for the cause."
King Francis

Quotes[]

Lady Kenna: No, I find it refreshing for a man to speak so frankly about ambition.
General Renaude: Well, I'm always happy to know I've pleased a lady.

Leith Bayard: One thing I will never do is risk getting on Catherine de Medici's bad side.
Princess Claude: You'd rather get on my bad side?!
Leith Bayard: Ha! A million times, yes.

Louis of Condé: My treason was in loving you.

Queen Mary: We can't risk meeting again.
Louis of Condé: For the rest of our lives.
Queen Mary: I hope that yours is a long one. Go. Live.

Lady Lola: You told me to protect my reputation, and now you've hurled it in the mud.

Lady Lola: You said you cared about me, and now you-
Lord Narcisse: I say a great many things. The mistake was yours in trusting me.

Lord Narcisse: Do you think, because we shared a few nice moments, that you saw some good in me that no one else had ever seen before?

Lord Narcisse: Give up this idea that nobody can know you and still love you.

General Renaude: I would never wed unless I heard from a woman's own lips that she desired me.

King Francis: You will always see him just as I will always see you. Naked in each other's arms.

Leith Bayard: I thought we could count on our love for one another. That's what I've always believed, but you never have, have you?

Sebastian: You mean that you encouraged the love of a man below you in rank? Because he found himself drawn into political intrigues he knew nothing about, with enemies he'd never had before? Because he found himself doing things he'd never contemplated, getting in deeper and deeper.
Queen Mary: Oh, God, Bash.
Sebastian: Yes. I walked this road first.

Queen Mary: Only a king could survive my love, and no one below. My rank is poison.

Sebastian: I'm sorry. Brave Mary, I'm sorry.

Queen Mary: We are king and queen, chained together as surely as prisoners in a dungeon. And if we are not to suffer as prisoners do, we must make peace with each other.

King Francis: France has been through so much. Most of this country is like dry tinder, just waiting for a spark. All that is needed is a face, a claim, a bloodline, and someone who is willing to die for the cause.
