Tasting Revenge
"Since I was a babe, I have been a queen. Since a child, I have been alone on foreign soil. I know how to keep my life, and my crown, and I will."
Queen Mary

Synopsis[]

Amy Brenneman Guest Stars
Mary's mother (Amy Brenneman) returns to advise Mary that her throne is in jeopardy. Mary makes a shocking proposition to Condé, along with a bold move to reclaim her throne. Francis moves closer to Lola after a setback with Mary, while King Antoine makes Kenna an interesting offer.

Plot[]

It is the funeral of the Duke of Guise. Marie de Guise is stating her eulogy while Condé is staring intensely at Queen Mary, which doesn't escape his brother, Antoine. Marie tells her daughter that they need to talk.

After the funeral, Francis pulls Lola aside. He informs her that he has made a possible alliance with the Habsburgs, an engagement for their son and an infant Hapsburg daughter. There is only one catch - the Duke and Duchess Von Amsberg want to meet Lola.

Kenna returns a ring that Antoine has left her to him and asks him to stop flirting with her, but he subtly continues to pursue her. He mentions his wife as a way to get her to trust him and help him decorate his party.

Marie questions Mary about her lack of an heir. Mary balks at the intrusion. Her mother gives her a herbal concoction to put her at ease before having sex. She reminds Mary that she must conceive an heir to protect her country and her crown.

Mary talks to Francis about her needing an heir. He has one, but she does not. He is rather appalled that she would base her choice solely on international policy, but Mary believes that it is their duty. He tells her that he needs to think about it.

Kenna tells Bash of the party Antoine is hosting and of her role in planning it. Bash suspects that Antoine is only trying to further sway Kenna to him. Kenna tries to talk him into attending the party with her, but he has to go run an errand in the village. He won't be back until late, but if she'll wait, they'll go together.

Francis seeks advice from his mother. Catherine thinks he should follow Mary's lead and do what she asks. However, the visit to Mary's chamber must be witnessed so that if Mary finds herself with child, there is no doubt about whose the child is.

Bash visits a woman in the village who knows about the healer. The healer cured her son of an illness, but blinded her other son in exchange.

Greer got a wig for Sharlene after the man chopped her hair off and cost her her living. Greer suggests she might make herself available to men at other venues and tells her about a party in town.

Marie de Guise is none too pleased with Lola for having a son with Francis out of wedlock and blames her for Mary's potential downfall. She set her up by poisoning her own drink prior to Lola coming by, angering her and then walking away. Lola took the drink.

Bash meets with the Lady in White who is a nun. He learns that she saves someone at a cost to another. He asks her to lay hands on him to prove that she is indeed gifted. She tells him that he will soon lose someone very close to him, but she doesn't know who.

Kenna is upset at how nothing is going according to plan. She realises that she hasn't even changed out of her dress into a new one for the party, so Antoine volunteers his wife's dress. Kenna reluctantly agrees and goes upstairs to change. Antoine makes sure the message Kenna sent to Bash to meet her at the party never reaches the castle.

Meanwhile, Lola is high from the drink she took, which Condé picks up on during a conversation with her.

At the castle, Francis is escorted by his guards into Mary's chamber, where they start kissing until they end up in bed. As they're starting to go further, Mary briefly pauses and points out that the sound of Francis' breath makes her nervous. But she carries on with Francis, until Francis stops on the grounds that it's too soon to be intimate.

Mary again suggests living separate lives and moving on with others, which prompts Francis to realise that she has feelings for Condé. Mary affirms it and adds that she can't get back together with Francis, as there is too much painful history for them to overcome, while Condé is untarnished. Unfortunately for Mary, Francis forbids her union with Condé.

Kenna walks downstairs to join the party in Antoine's wife's dress. She asks if Bash has arrived and finds out that he hasn't. Meanwhile, Bash is at the castle, also asking about Kenna's whereabouts.

When Lola lays eyes on the baby of the Von Amsbergs, she points out how ugly it is and how it takes after its equally hideous parents. Francis takes Lola away before she can insult them further.

Mary tells her mother that there will be no heir, because she was raped when Protestants attacked that castle, and that is why she and Francis have separate bedrooms. Marie's response is far from appropriately sympathetic and prompts Mary to realise that she is utterly and completely alone.

Francis sends Lola back to the castle and commands that her servants attend to her through the night.

Condé meets with Mary. She confesses that she cares for him deeply, but it is worse than ever for them because Francis has forbidden their union. But he wasn't mean to her about it, unlike her mother. Condé wonders if her mother's harsh behaviour may be because she is on opiates.

Bash runs into Kenna enjoying herself with Antoine at the party. Kenna realises that she has been deceived by Antoine when Bash tells her that he never received her message. He leaves the party and she runs after him, trying to defend herself. Bash believes that Kenna is not happy with him and wants more than she has. She tells him that yes, she wants more and she wants it with him.

Back at the castle, Lola runs into Lord Narcisse's arms and offers herself to him. Surprisingly, he turns her down and asks that she is watched over by the servants. He wants for her to remember when they come together for the first time.

Mary confronts her mother about the opiates and learns that she is dying. She has cancer and the opiates ease her pain. Mary's brother, James, is weak and she must help him for as long as she can. She wanted the world to fall at Mary's feet, but she can't protect her when she's gone. Mary asks her mother to no longer worry about her, because she knows how to keep her life and her crown.

Antoine seeks out Kenna. She tells him to stay away, but he wants her to be his wife. He wants her to be his wife. Kenna reminds him that she is married, but Antoine believes a church would overturn it.

Catherine and Francis talk about Mary again. He tells her Mary has released him to be free with whomever he wishes. Catherine promises to support him in whatever he decides. As she leaves, Francis hears Lola and the baby outside, having fun in the snow. He opens his window and they talk and laugh about how disastrous last night was.

Sharlene runs up to Greer with a lot of money, which she has earned last night thanks to Greer. Greer is greeted by Charlene who gives her a lot of money. They agree that she's going to be a madam for the girls. She'll tell them where the parties are and they'll share their profits.

Mary shares her news about her mother with Condé. She has decided to return to Scotland to rule in person. She tells him she wants him by her side.

Just moments later, Antoine tells Condé that Queen Elizabeth has asked for him. She invites him to court her. He could be the next King of England.

Quotes[]

Lady Kenna: You want to give me 300,000 gold deniers? To go shopping?

Marie de Guise: You are on the cusp of losing your country.

Marie de Guise: Either you or Elizabeth will rule Scotland and England. Make an heir and it will be you.

Sebastian: I don't think it's a good idea for me to go to a social event hosted by a man who knows I killed his brother.

Lady Kenna: How many more battles for you and lonely nights for me until it's all done?

Lady Lola: It was one night!
Marie de Guise: "One night". Don't flaunt your bountiful womb to me!

Marie de Guise: Do you know what happens to disposable queens? They are disposed of!

Marie de Guise: Remember your role in her demise. I know I will.

King Francis: I don't want to move on with others, with anyone. But... you do?

King Francis: Did you come to me because you're afraid you'll go to him? Or because you want to secure your rule in Scotland before you do?

King Antoine: Who knew vengeance could be quite so invigorating.

Lady Lola: Oh, it's nice that you're here. That you were willing to marry our son to that ugly baby because you are a good person!

Queen Mary: I am more than a marker to hold an alliance, or a breeder for the next generation or the next. I am my own person. A woman grown, and tonight I realize that I am utterly and completely alone. But when I look at you, I feel I am better for it.

Lady Lola: He didn't even offer me a bath! And he always offers a bath.

Marie de Guise: I wanted the world for you. I wanted France and England to fall at your feet.

Queen Mary: Lay down your burdens, Mother, so I am no longer your worry.

Queen Mary: Since I was a babe, I have been a queen. Since a child, I have been alone on foreign soil. I know how to keep my life, and my crown, and I will.
