Synopsis[]
Catherine Conspires to Have Mary Eliminated
When Mary and Bash are captured and forced to return to the castle, they discover Catherine waiting and even more determined to keep Mary and Francis apart. Francis learns of the prophecy, but his determination to wed Mary changes everything: in love, in politics, tearing the bond of brothers apart, and hardening Catherine's resolve to destroy Mary at any cost.
Plot[]
Mary and Sebastian have been on the run for over a week. They evade Henry's guards by jumpting off a cliff into a river. Henry has been vigorous in his search for his son and Mary. Catherine tries to discourage him from continuing to search for them, but he does not relent. Nor does Francis, who has just returned after yet another futile hunt. He senses Catherine's hand in Mary's sudden change of heart. Mary and Sebastian reach an inn in the village. They discuss Bash's legitimisation. While they're undressing out of their drenched clothes, someone knocks on the door. Bash goes to answer it while Mary hides under the bed. It is the King's Guard. They threaten to chop one of Bash's fingers off if he does not reveal Mary's whereabouts, which prompts Mary to come out of hiding. They are taken back to court and Bash is thrown into the dungeon, while Mary is confronted by Francis. He doesn't believe that Mary left because her friend Aylee died like she claimed. Their conversation is interrupted when Henry requests Mary's presence in the throne room. Henry wants Mary to follow through with her marriage to Francis. When she says no, he ups the stakes. If Mary does not marry his son and lay claim to England, he will charge Bash with treason and execute him. Mary is dressing herself when Catherine bursts into her chambers. Catherine is mad that Mary even returned. She wants Mary to lie and say that she has married Bash, but Mary instead suggests telling Francis about the prophecy. Nostradamus creates a doll and gives it to Clarissa, whom he is still holding captive. He tells Clarissa that she is to stay there until he believes that she has learned her lesson. Once he leaves, Clarissa picks up the doll he threw on the ground and rips it apart. She finds a dagger inside. Mary tells Francis about the prophecy. She uses Nostradamus' Prediction of Aylee's death as proof that the prophecy is true. However, Francis doesn't believe it and vows to never quit fighting for them. In an audience with the King and Queen, Mary tells them of her decision. She will stake her claim on England and marry Henry's son. But not Francis. Bash. In private, Mary explains her predicament. Henry wants England, Mary wants something in return. She believes her solution to be the best one, even if it means changing the line of succession and causing civil unrest. While Henry is torn, Catherine is vehemently against the plan, as it would strip her of her title as Queen. Once Mary leaves, Catherine reveals Diane's illicit plan to have Bash legitimised to Henry. When he asks for proof, she points him to Kenna. Mary and her ladies talk. Kenna is worried about what will happen to her when Henry asks the Pope for an annulment and marries Diane. She goes on to voice her fear of being poisoned by Diane, like she believes Aylee was. |
Quotes[]
King Henry: They didn't just disappear! Sebastian has many talents, but magic isn't one of them!
Queen Catherine: I grew weary of your threats.
King Henry: I grew weary of you a decade ago.
Queen Catherine: Mary isn't your usual girl. She is Scotland. She is its queen.
Prince Francis: You cannot let superstition or fear rule your life.
King Henry: Let God mock the English for a change.
Prince Francis: You'd kill everyone in this room to get me on the throne. To protect me. In hope that I would then protect you. But my first order as King would be to execute you if you were to harm anyone here. my brother, my father, Mary. This has to stop.
Prince Francis: I see a future for us quite clearly. We would be happy. I would give anything to spend my life, however long, at your side.
Queen Mary: I know you would.
Prince Francis: But you see a future without me, and that's the one you choose.
Prince Francis: And you, my brother. I envied you for so long. And look at us now. You have what's mine, and I have your freedom. Well, I plan to take full advantage of it.
Prince Francis: Long may you reign.
Queen Catherine: Happiness is the one thing we queens can never have.
Queen Catherine: A word of advice for the next Queen of France. Remember, no matter how many countries you rule, or palaces you own, power is always fleeting. It can be taken away by the stroke of a pen or the blade of an axe.
Sebastian: You're going to be my wife. How very unexpected.
