Bruises That Lie
"I never said I was a good man, but one can receive good advice from a bad person."
Gideon Blackburn

Synopsis[]

Mary and Elizabeth Find Themselves in Dire Situations
Mary becomes suspicious of Prince Don Carlos' true condition and relies on Gideon to help her uncover the truth. Elizabeth makes a shocking discovery which could change the course of her reign over England and forces Dudley to make a tough decision. Meanwhile, Narcisse forces Claude to marry someone of his choosing, against her wishes.

Plot[]

Queen Elizabeth visits a village and walks among her people, hoping to earn their love. William is pleased that Elizabeth has turned her attention back to ruling now that Dudley is away from court. He also informs Elizabeth that Lola will be joining her at court. Elizabeth gets sick once she's safely inside her carriage.

Mary is helping Don Carlos sign a decree to help her people in Scotland when Narcisse brings in a document that promises France Spanish gold if signed. Narcisse wants to pay the French soldiers for their sacrifice in Scotland, and despite her moral dilemma, Mary allows Don Carlos to sign the paper.

When she cannot sleep, Mary goes to the balcony where she meets Gideon. They talk about how both of them lost a loved one. Gideon steers the conversation to Don Carlos. He believes Mary shouldn't marry him because they will never love each other. However, Mary calls him out on attempting to manipulate her into calling off the wedding.

Christophe takes Catherine to what looks like the basement, where he unveils the sex horse. He would like to put it to use in order to keep things interesting. Catherine is thrown off by the idea and ends their visit.

While Mary discusses her marriage to Don Carlos with the Spanish envoy, Gideon interrupts her to report that Elizabeth has recently reconsidered Don Carlos as a husband. A formal marriage proposal will arrive in two days' time. Gideon is bluffing, but Mary and the Spanish don't know it. Upon hearing the news, Don Carlos' advisors decide to delay the marriage between the Prince and Mary until Elizabeth's proposal arrives.

Elizabeth tells Dudley that she's pregnant with his child, and they both agree she cannot keep the child unless they are married. Dudley can't get divorced, and even if they were married, their child would be considered illegitimate. His only solution is that she marry another. When she disagrees, he promises to divorce his wife and marry her, even if that would mean the end of her reign. William believes her idea is a bad one, but she begs him for his support.

Meanwhile, Claude is being courted by a suitor. Leith interrupts her visit and steals her away in the guise of a Latin lesson, when he in fact teaches her how to fight and protect herself. He knows that they cannot be together forever, but hopes that they can enjoy each other for a time. She turns him away.

Bash meets Delphine in his chambers. She hasn't been outside for a long time and refuses to go. Bash receives a letter from the killer, in which he claims that his desire to kill is gone. Bash believes that the man will kill again, but Delphine isn't so sure.

Mary asks Greer to intercept Gideon's communication to England. She doesn't believe Elizabeth's marriage proposal is real. While watching a performer, Don Carlos has flashes of memories of the night of his accident. He asks to be taken back to the castle to lie down.

When alone with his advisor, Don Carlos reveals that his speech and movement have been returning, but he has kept it a secret. He knows Mary used him and is planning to use her in return to take Scotland.

In a meeting with Mary and Catherine, Don Carlos' advisors ask that Don Carlos be granted the Crown Matrimonial upon the request of his father, King Philip. If Mary died without an heir, Don Carlos would retain the title to her country. Catherine and Mary believe the request to be very large, but they will take it into consideration. Catherine urges Mary to accept his proposition.

Claude speaks to Greer about Leith and bemoans the fact that Greer was his "one great love." Greer reminds Claude that love is always a risk, but it's one worth taking.

Bash escorts Delphine into the village where she has horrible feelings of murder and rage. On the night in Greer's tavern, the murderer transferred his rage and hatred onto her, so now she carries his pain. Bash escorts her back to the castle away from the crowd.

Mary agrees to grant Don Carlos the Crown Matrimonial under the condition that the wedding take place on the following day. Mary's dog sniffs Don Carlos' bad hand and she watches as he pulls it away from the dog, realising that it's no longer weak.

Robert finds Amy and tells her that he's seeking a divorce and he'll continue making sure she has the best care. From his hurry to marry Elizabeth, Amy deduces that Elizabeth is pregnant and threatens to tell the world that the Queen is pregnant should he try to leave her. Robert locks her away and dismisses the servants.

Mary discusses Don Carlos' condition and the fact that he's hiding his healing from her with Greer. Greer brushes her concern off as just having cold feet and advises her to walk down the aisle tomorrow to save their country.

Christophe plans to try the sex horse with a servant. Catherine walks in on them and after dismissing the servant, she asks what he hopes to gain from being her lover. He would like a position in the King's guard. She grants it to him.

Mary meets Gideon in the night. As Gideon is the only person in the castle who doesn't want her to marry the Spanish Prince, Mary gives him the opportunity to prove her right.

Elizabeth and Robert discuss his wife, Amy, and what they might do about her. They agree to lock her away in an insane asylum, which would make her unable to expose Elizabeth's pregnancy and give Robert grounds for a divorce. However, Amy breaks out of her room and jumps from the upper balcony before either of them have a chance to enact their plan.

William apprises Elizabeth of Amy's death. Since Robert had dismisses the servants and was the last person seen with Amy, it appears as though he killed her.

Delphine is packing when Bash enters his chambers. She plans to go and help with the healing of a group who were injured in an avalanche, and although Bash lets her go, he vows to wait for her and tells her that she always has someone to come home to.

While entertaining the same suitor from before, Leith again interrupts them. They carry on a conversation about "Latin" until her suitor interjects his own unsolicited opinion and Claude dismisses him. Alone at last, Claude and Leith agree to commit to each other and consummate their relationship.

Just before her wedding, Gideon tells Mary that Don Carlos has hired a team of mercenaries to accompany her to Scotland. The mercenaries are particularly renowed for assassination, which if successful would make Don Carlos the King of Scotland. Mary tricks Don Carlos into revealing his healing and plan to steal Scotland away from her. Catherine runs him out of her country when Narcisse is too afraid to.

Narcisse, as Regent, informs Claude that she must marry in order to help pay French debts.

Elizabeth and Dudley meet to discuss Amy's death and how they can move forward after it. They realise that Amy has killed herself so that they will pay the price.

Gideon and Mary discuss the end of her betrothal to the Spain Prince. She believes that love is not in her future after the one she shared with Francis. Mary learns that Gideon's daughter is being held by Elizabeth and that's part of the reason he works for the Queen. He warns her that Scotland may not want her to return.

While accompanying Delphine to her carriage, Bash gives her his coat, but she feels warm, in spite of the cold weather. In contrast, a man sitting by the fireplace is freezing. A woman comes up to him and he presses her to the bed, stabbing her and carving her heart out.
